How to Perfect Your Donation Poster

February 18, 2010

Design Ideas

When creating a donation poster, you are usually limited by your own budget. NPO’s are always struggling for funding, and this has caused many Non-Profits to become more design savvy. If you are sitting down with the challenge of creating a great donation poster, take a look at some of these helpful tips.

Shapes

Everything is shapes. Once you see them you can’t forget them. So use simple shapes to piece together intricate images. This is how many cartoony vector graphics are made. You can use shapes, lines and the pen tool to create intricate designs in Photoshop. Turn those shapes into paths, and you can apply all sorts of color and shadowing effects.

Backgrounds

Don’t let the background be static, use a solid color or gradient to keep the audience interested. In the example shown here. In the example above, the green background is used as a method to rest one’s eyes as well as enhance the image as a whole. This is also a good example of how a simple color scheme can give great results.

Pictures

Try increasing the size of some pictures to create design accents out of existing pictures. Using this technique, you can enlarge a person to show one side, or focus on a facial feature from any stock photo, rather than trying to cut around the parts you don’t need. If you play around with your angles, you can end up with some really neat effects that will help your poster stand out. Just remember, they will see the art most likely before the words.

Words

Let the message behind your campaign take center stage. Focus on the message you are trying to send, and make the text stand out. The slogan or primary message should always be in the largest font, with your company logo or name being second largest. Think about order of importance, they need to know what it is, so make that huge, where it is, slightly smaller text, and who’s involved. Always list your sponsors and the names of your staff, if you have the space to do so. Giving accolades to those involved shows that you are a community effort.

To Roll or to Mount?

Where you hang your poster will determine how you mount it. Let’s say you print an 11×17 poster made for telephone pole hanging. You don’t want to mount it to a board; this would look out of place, or may not work at all. Printing a rolled poster gives you more options for where to hang it. Hanging posters inside might warrant mounting to a board just because the poster won’t have to struggle against the wind or wrap around an object.
