Have a Classy 4th of July with American Art Canvas Prints
July 3, 2009
It’s the 4th of July tomorrow. A lot of people are hanging star-spangled banners and getting ready for BBQ parties. But here’s a different, classy way to celebrate: with art. American Art style canvas prints can add culture to your home, and stay on your walls all year round. Here are some great ideas.
Sophisticated Poster Prints for the 4th of July
Luminism
Among the Sierra Nevada Mountains, California. Albert Bierstadt. 1868. Oil on canvas. Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC.
Luminism is a landscape painting style from the 1850s – 1870s. Artists in this genre try to hide their brushstrokes, because they’re going for a luminous effect. The light effects and aerial views make these art pieces just glow with tranquility. Luminist art usually has reflective water and a soft, hazy sky.
American Realism
McSorley’s Bar . John Sloan. 1912. Detroit Institute of the Arts.
American Realism was a turn of the century trend in art, music and literature. Artists during this time recorded the current periods’ viewpoints through art and focused on describing what was real. This art style is great for gritty, down-to-earth prints on canvas with a real urban feel.
Synchromism
Airplane Synchromy in Yellow-Orange. Stanton MacDonald-Wright. 1920. Oil on canvas. Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
An art movement back in 1912, synchronism says that color and sound are similar. Colors in a painting can be arranged like notes in a symphony, and painting in color scales can make you hear or feel music. This style can go great with pastel walls or bright and sunny rooms.
**There are more American art styles out there you can make gorgeous canvas prints of. But remember to check if they’re in the public domain; that is, if they’ve been published before January 1, 1923, or the artist has been dead for more than 70 years. Choose well, happy canvas art printing, and have a classically fantastic Fourth of July!
