20 Yummy Fruit and Vegetable Posters from World War 2!

As you may have already know, it was the 69th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Empire of Japan, last week. The day after the attack, Nazi Germany declared war on the United States and the formerly isolationist nation was never the same after. We thought it would be appropriate to commemorate this momentous event in our own way, by showcasing these amazing fruit and vegetable posters from World War 2.

It might be an obvious point, but food is an extremely important resource in war. It’s one of the first resources to be affected, as many agricultural workers are often drafted or sign up for tours of duty. During the Second World War, the United States and its allies all had programs to boost food production. In the United States, Victory Gardens, small plots of land in backyards all over the country, produced all sorts of veggies that helped the war effort. Fruit and vegetable posters were produced in amazing variety to deal with many aspects of home food production.

While we might not all like our veggies, many people all over the world owe their freedoms in part to those who labored on the home front to grow the food the Allies needed. Here are 20 examples of posters of these food production programs.

Home canning was encouraged by the US government as a way to stave off possible food shortages.

Children were encouraged to participate in the American war effort through Victory Gardens

Victory Gardens were also encouraged as a way to supplement rationed food supplies

A Soviet propaganda poster in Constructivist style encouraging increased agriculture

Another poster encouraging home canning. Notice that the jar is slightly tilted at angle, giving the piece a more dynamic look than would be possible if the jar were upright.

Aside from addressing wartime concerns, posters also addressed more mundane issues. This poster advocating proper nutrition for children was produced by the California War Council.

One way Victory Gardens were encouraged was through contests, such as the one advertised in this poster.

Government propagandists continually emphasized the connection between growing vegetables at home with the war effort.

Another poster encouraging children to participate in the home front by growing produce. They could consider themselves lucky as in other countries, children were more directly involved in the conflict.

Potential confusion for dyslexics notwithstanding, this poster features very strong design elements, if you can look past the funny-looking arm. The layout, from the foot overlapping the white space to the slightly diagonal orientation of some visual elements make for a visually dynamic poster.

This sample is evocative of Grant Wood’s American Gothic, which is perhaps one of the most copied and parodied paintings ever produced. Also, working on a farm this summer… not my thing.

Food security was the underlying rationale of the Victory Garden program. This poster, while featuring what today would be very simplistic patriotic symbolism, features a solid layout, with the “v” leading the viewer’s eyes to the fruits and veggies in the middle of the poster. Different fonts are used to emphasized the desired action and the reasoning behind it.

By the middle of WW2, almost half of all vegetables were produced at home.

Differing font sizes were and are still used to emphasize certain parts of a message.

Rising prices was also used as a rationale for growing food at home. Note how they use a man in military uniform to connect growing veggies with the war effort.

Some of the Victory Garden posters were also informational. This eye-catching example encourages pesticide use. It pits a bewildered woman against what appears to be a ginormous bug. Note again the slanted design elements. These help suggest movement in an otherwise static image.

Pearl Jam Tour Posters: 20 Years of Rockin’ in the Free World

Pearl Jam is perhaps the most enduring band to have come out of the Seattle music scene in the 90s. They’ve been around for two decades and have managed to outlast most of their more famous contemporaries. The band has also garnered an active and extremely loyal fanbase rivaled perhaps only by the likes of The Grateful Dead’s.

Their long musical legacy has also spawned a huge and extremely varied body of visual art, most notably on posters. With the band’s status as one of the world’s most popular touring bands, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Pearl Jam tour posters are highly sought-after collectibles.

Pearl Jam’s music is somewhat eclectic- their influences range from 70′s stadium rock and 50′s Doo-Wop, to post-punk and children’s music. Their sound also proved itself to be dynamic, having evolved considerably since their heyday in the early 90′s as THE purveyor of arguably inauthentic grunge. The poster art produced by their fans, their artistic collaborators, and by the band itself reflects on Pearl Jam’s very essence – something unmistakable yet maddeningly frustrating to pin down.

21 Fun n’ Freaky Carnival Poster Samples

Carnivals as we know them have been thrilling people the world over for the past two centuries. While they provide fun for the whole family, there was always a hint of seediness about them. The rickety rides, the gasp-inducing freaks, the faint stench of urine mixed with the saccharine-sweet smell of cotton candy, the nutritionally questionable food, and the sweaty skeeviness of the often dentally-challenged carnies are all part of what makes these places exciting, for me at least.

For the longest time, the cheap, borderline-sleazy kicks these places provided have been embodied and advertised through carnival posters. As you will see in the gallery later, the aesthetics of carnival poster design have not differed much in the past hundred years. The technology and techniques might have changed, but the overall look remains constant.

There are some notable stylistic differences with carnival posters from different parts of the world, each reflecting on the culture of the place. However, whatever the place or era, all of them suggest that the good times are a-rollin’! 15 Examples of Pre-war Vintage Chinese Poster Art

China in the 1920s- 1930s was in rapid transition, much as it is today. The ancient coexisted with the modern, and home-grown ideas blended with those introduced by foreigners. Nowhere else is this more obvious than in vintage Chinese posters of the era. Chinese artists of the period used traditional techniques with a relatively modern medium- posters. Examples from Shanghai and Hong Kong and other foreign ports of entry are particularly interesting for the wide range of products featured.

One very notable thing about these posters is that they almost invariably featured women in a qipao (often erroneously called cheongsam), a modern, form-fitting, Western-influenced, yet undeniably Chinese garb. There is a huge contradiction in these posters, however. While the qipao, with their often daring cuts, symbolized female liberation, the women depicted wearing them were almost always cast in a subservient light.

Mao Tse Tung’s Communist Revolution brought an end to this period in commercial art. But whatever the politics behind them, these posters offer an insight into a time that was both dangerous and exciting. Here are 15 great examples of vintage Chinese posters from the 20′s and 30′s.

15 Awesome Vintage Posters From China

A rather conservative example of a typical cigarette advertisement of the era. Many ads of the time (especially for cigarettes) were highly sexual in nature and often featured nudity. The message of these posters wasn’t often very clear.

Ruan Lingyu, a famous silent film actress of the era. She remains an icon throughout China. Several books and movies have been about her tragically short life.

You wouldn’t be able to guess just by looking at it, but this is an ad for a clothing store. The ladies around the table are playing mahjong, a tile game similar in concept to poker.

1930′s beer ad. Chinese today remain huge consumers of beer, a Western introduction. Today, China accounts for largest total consumption in terms of volume.

A Prosperous City That Never Sleeps- a famous poster design by Yuan Xiutang. Unfortunately, many other artists of the era remain uncredited.

A somewhat spooky 1920′s ad for K-K Batteries, Limited by Wan Nong.

This ad was commissioned by a Japanese cosmetics company that did business in China.

Another ad commissioned by a Japanese firm. These ladies are selling pesticides. Not very obvious, though.

“Beauty and puppy play together as the master cries.” - Humorous poster for Chui Hua gold shop, 1929. Some humor might be lost in the the translation.

If you didn’t know how to read Chinese, it would be difficult to recognize this as a fire insurance advertisement.

A vintage Chinese poster of non-commercial nature. These are comparatively rare.

From the early 1940′s. San Francisco’s Chinese Community also produced posters in styles similar to the ones in the Chinese Mainland at the time. No qipao in this one.

Very unusual poster, featuring three generations enjoying Hatamen Cigarettes -and no women!

Nope, this pretty lady isn’t an actress. Universal Sing Kee Picture Co. didn’t produce movies; rather they were a printing press that produced the kind of calendars and posters featured here. This is an ad they made for their own company.

They sure like their smokes. A very westernized ad for Keenien Cigarettes. Keenien (jì niàn) means “Commemorative” in Mandarin.
